Putting controls on the wheel that are major controls is like going into TOYOTA territory. Controls for your Ipod or some other non driving purposeful type widget is not going to cause you problems but things you have to have work at all times for being legal or safe should be refrained from. If you never plan on driving your car at an autox or road coarse you will be ok but don't go into territory that can cause you problems you don't need.
Put another way.
Steer clear of of steering obstacles and have clear steering.

To Be honest, I'm not sure anyone would NEED any advantage against me in a autocross.
Just think though how embarrassing it would be to accidentally get beat by me.
