I know that feeling. Went into a (insert BIG hydraulic manufacturer name) shop near me and asked for copper or aluminum crush washers for a 10mm fuel pump fitting only to be told the fitting I had in my hand was 1/8" NPT. It was clearly not tapered. The pitch did not match pipe thread. It fit perfectly into the 10mm straight threaded electric walbro pump I was installing. I finally gave up trying to convince the person helping me that I knew what I had and left. They had 3/8 washers that were OK in diameter, but too thin. It was the manager was helping me.
