I like my Ridgid benders, but have not used imperial to have a direct comparison.

I cut the stainless tubing with a hardened fine tooth hack-saw. Then use a jewelers file to put a slight chamfer on both the inside and outside of the tubing. My flare tool is an imperial 37*, I put a drop of marvel mystery oil on the rollers prior to each flare.

When it comes to fittings, I have used both steel and aluminum, I really dont have a preference. If you run into a sealing problem you can use a seco seal to cure any leaks.
