One trick that i do is put down etch (on bare metal), epoxy, then a couple coats of urethane primer wet on wet, because the primer sands a lot easier then epoxy, and and you have more material on it so don't sand through as much when doing the mud work.. also its nice to have some primer on it to block right from the beginning

I use SPI
www.southernpolyurethanes.com epoxy that sands real easy. I spray two coats than blocked it with 80 to find the low spots. Do my bodywork than spray more epoxy and than two coats of Evercoat Slick Sand. Next step is sand with 80 until I start seeing the black epoxy followed by two more coats of Slick Sand and block with 180 than epoxy prime again.
I had to move my car outside for awhile so I epoxy primed the quarters again before all the bodywork was finished.
