If you are looking to see some cool abandoned military sites, while you are in SF, go across the Golden Gate (North) to the Marin Side, take the second right that you can take after going over the bridge, follow the signs for Marin Headlands.
You will drive up a winding road and once you get up there, you will be treated to the best views of the bridge and SF skyline to be had. Suggest going in the early afternoon for best visibility.
Follow the signs for the various gun Batteries, and you will see some pretty neat stuff.
