You will drive up a winding road and once you get up there, you will be treated to the best views of the bridge and SF skyline to be had. Suggest going in the early afternoon for best visibility.
Follow the signs for the various gun Batteries, and you will see some pretty neat stuff.

Thanks for the tip, we have a rental car while we're in San Fran, might go for a drive and check it out. Of course we are going to visit alcatraz also while we're there.
