this has been covered many times... but the answer is yes... the two things to worry about is the stat of your old tank... and the fuel vapours
let it dry out... purge the vapours with air till all residual fuel has evaporated... and just to be sure.. put some dry ice in the tank, that will fill it with co2, making it impossible for any fuel vapour to burn/explode..
gasoline vapour isnt that explosive, and its very volatile.. so ince its dry its dry.. i would be more worried about welding a diesel tank..
many people remove the two front corners of the tank to make room for the tailpipe bends btw
