Those are collapsible intermediate shafts, and although they are a very important feature, they often get confused with the nhtsa requirements of a collapsible steering column. Meaning, the column itself is setup to collapse independent of the intermediate shaft. It was a requirement for all cars starting in the late 60s. It’s inexcusable for the aftermarket to be selling columns that don’t meet a 60s standard. I had ididit build me a column that included the collapsing feature for $75 more than a standard column. When asked why they don’t have them, they responded with “there isn’t a demand”. I only believe there isn’t a demand because their customers aren’t informed. I wasn’t and had originally purchased and was about to install a spear. How often do you crash your car? Not often (and they actually asked me this). But with all we do to make them safe (roll cage, five points etc.), it’s silly not to make the chunk of metal you’re most likely going to hit a little softer.
