Yes, you can convert the CTS-V T56 to match the GTO version. It's not exactly an inexpensive swap, but you will need to change the following:
-Front plate (GTO / LS Fbody style)
-Mainshaft (GTO shaft)
-Tailhousing (GTO / Fbody style)
-Internal shift rail components (Fbody style)

From the outside measurements, the GTO and Fbody T56's are the same. The stock shifters are different, but that is an easy switch. The main differences are inside. The CTS-V, GTO and Corvette T56's all use the updated and desirable double/triple synchro designs compared to the single/double synchro's of the Fbody's. Also, the CTS-V and GTO's have different gear ratio's for 1st thru 3rd gears as compared to the Fbody units. The CTS-V and GTO's have a lower 1st gear which widens the gear spread a tad but also gives better acceleration down low, especially nice for heavier cars.

On a side note, and the OP might already have found this out, but you can not upgrade the CTS-V to use the Viper mainshaft. Because the Vipers used the older design single/double synchro's, the mainshafts are not compatible with the newer double/triple synchro's of the CTS-V or GTO's. There are other options for an upgraded mainshaft for the double/triple synchro T56's though.....

I hope this clears the mud a little bit.
