As mentioned above, it doesnt matter what stat you are running if the fans arent turning on until 220, which is about right for stock ecu setting. I too had trouble with air trapped in the system. If the upper & lower hoses are hot when running engine, air is likely not the problem; at least that has been my experience. With a 187 stat you could maybe set the ecu to turn the fans on at 200 & off at 190. Any lower & the fan will likely just run all the time. Let us know what you find out.
