But if the section width of the tire is 12.5" as shown on a few manufacturer sites, the edge 1/2" of the wheel edge won't really matter for me, right? The tire width will really determine where I need to place the wheel...

As I've thought more about this, given that I'm not slamming the car low, and the Firebird wheel well is so rounded, it's hard to see how I'll have a real issue as long as I'm within the 1/4 - 1/2" that I'm working towards...

Thanx!

A 1/4 to 1/2" can be the difference between a tire rubbing on an outer fender, or not... I think it's a big deal. No matter what you may read, industry standard is that backspace is measured from the very back edge of a rim. If anyone tells you otherwise they have no idea what they are talking about. Ask any manufacturer, and they'll tell you the same.

So on that 12.5" wide tire (315mm = 12.5") and on an 11.5" wide rim, which will measure 12.5" overall in width (which again is industry standard) your sidewall will be exactly parallel to your wheel. Now if that is the look you are after, then go for it, but if you are like most guys, and want to have a little tire bulge pass the rim, go with an 11" wheel. At 12" overall, that 315 tire will look right at home. Call me anytime to talk more about wheel, tire, and the right backspace. We have recommended and proven custom figments for most cars, Which include brake, tub, and rearend variations.
