Well that is a good point. I was coming from the position of I'd do all the work myself and just have to buy the parts. If you'd have to pay someone to fix it the deal might not look as good.
I still think it's worth trying to find out what happened to the motor and visually inspect the bottom end. Maybe the guy doesn't know what he's talking about or it has a different problem that might not be as big a deal.
If you were planning on beefing up the trans a bit anyway as I've heard is a good idea on the GTO T56 then the worn synchros don't really matter. If the trans is disconnected from the engine you can turn the input shaft in each gear and make sure it rotates smoothly indicating all the gear teeth are probably intact.
