8" wheel is probably fine but way too narrow for a 285. Even if you do get the tire on the 8" wheel, it's going to bulge badly, IMO. Most early mustangs can't accommodate a 285 in the front either, without some serious flares. You can stick with the 8" but you might be looking at a 245 40 (to keep a similar profile to your 305 35). If you do happen to have enough fender and suspension to fit a 285 in the front, you should go with a 9inch wheel at the minimum, and even that is considered a little small for a 285.
