A sure fire way I have used over the years is to...
Set one valve intake or exhaust and peak lift and adjust the other valve on the same cylinder, which will now be at it lowest point on the cam, too zero lash. Then preload it too 1/4 or 1/2 turn past zero. I prefer 1/4 turn but have had some ticking on some setups. If a 1/4 turn works use it. Do the same thing for the opposite valve and go one cylinder at a time. Works every time.
