i think that the vvt would be easier than the mds to retain. ive done a couple swaps putting the 09 and newer motor into an 05-08 charger/magnum.
the easiest way to do that is to swap over the reluctor wheel on the crank from the older motor, install a vvt lock, and just use the old pcm. in your case, you could use the mopar/aem computer setup. on the plus side, without the vvt you can run a pretty decent size cam with no piston to valve clearance issues.
as far as keeping the vvt, you need something that can communicate with the vvt solenoid properly, and im not sure what system will do that.
or you could use a 6.1 instead of the 5.7, which does away with the vvt and mds altogether.
