Have you looked at the Earl's Seals It grommets. They might work.
http://www.holley.com/types/Seals-It...et%20Seals.asp I was thinking about using these on my steering column as I've also smoothed the firewall. I see that the biggest hole size is just over an inch, but I wonder if they would stretch enough to fit around the column.
