Not sure of tricks, but make sure to use a center punch first so the drill bit doesn't walk on you and scratch the paint. Also you can use a strong tape to protect the paint when you are drilling. To make sure you don't go to deep and run the drill chuck into the paint put a piece of tape on the bit it self and go slow when drilling so you don't push to hard and ruin the paint.
