On a related note, I think many of you know this, but if you want a real budget LS solution the used 6.0l truck engines are a screaming bargain. We've gotten a couple in the $1K range for swaps. Add in a Speartech harness, used LS6 intake, a used ECU, and a cam package - viola, near 400 RWHP for about $2500.
Also, these have about 9.5 compression stock, which means they'll run on regular fuel normally aspirated, and will work well with moderate levels of boost
Only real downside is the iron block, which will add 70-80 lb on your front wheels. Still as light as a first gen small block, though.
