Educate yourself thoroughly on the complete process. Specifically the build process from selecting the right shop, right parts, and sorting out the end product. Many, many, many of the projects are never driven around here as they never get to the finish line. Most are either due to the wrong builder or eyes that are much larger than their resources.
Personally, I'd find the best car you can and modify it instead of building from complete scratch.
