I'm on the downside of a project that started as a primered shell. It had been blasted and coated in a self-etching primer when I got the shell. Between the time it was blasted and when I sent it to the body shop after fab was about 5 years. There was zero issue with surface rust on the areas that had primer and anywhere I needed to modify or weld the self etching primer ground off without trouble.
I would highly recommend it if you are going to blast the car. I'm sure the body knowledgable guys here can recommend a product. Perhaps even something you could spray yourself with a cheap spray gun depending on your local legalities and situation.
