Aaron, that is more than likely your clutch rattling. That's why it gets quiter when you depress the pedal.....it's loose. When you depress it, that puts tension on the clutch plates, hence, stopping the rattling. The rattling sound means the clutch is sort of "wobbling" as it spins which is what's making the noise. Check the bolts and make sure it is on the transmission input shaft right. I hope all this makes sense, because that's the best way I can explain it. LOL!!
I don't know all the mechanic lingo and correct terms.
