I was considering getting him (I understand its not really a joint present) a nice DSLR camera to replace his broken mid-range camera. My goal would be to help him get started photographing weddings, families, cars, ect for a business. He works part time and really needs to find some extra work, so I thought this might be a good stepping stone.

Now, to do this, do you need a $5,000 - $6,000 camera, or is a $1500 - $2000 camera enough?

If anyone does this type of work, would love some advice as well.

Thanks,
Tim
If I had to do it over, one priority would be a full-frame sensor because of the lens selections, not image quality.

Canon's newest offering looks to be very good in respect to features and image sensor performance.

Nikon's D600 would be another good option.

This Canon T3i with 18-135 lens gives very good performance for $800.
