I've never met a bad dog only ones that have been screwed up by humans.
A very daunting task you undertook and with dogs of that stature there are serious risks. We recently rescued/adopted a Great Dane and compared to the challenges you've faced it's been very easy and over the top in emotional rewards. Every day with our Dane just keeps getting better.
