I remember at School, then we got an Iron "cut-off" each, that we could only use a file to make a certain length and be perfectly square before we could move on, then we had to mill it according to blueprints in a "stair-pattern" and then drill/mill holes With specific Width, lengths, depths and such. When done, it was over to the lathe Good way to learn the basics and train, now I dont know anything.. Ha..Ha..
