Default Aluminum Gage

So, I'm in the process of making the under hood trim panels for our project. I made the Radiator cover out of 18ga. (.047") steel. This was mostly to resist bends and dings from leaning in under the hood. I am considering making the rest out of 3003-H14 Aluminum. My question is, what gage? I have been back and forth in my own mind between 16 ga. (.05") and 18 ga. (.04"). What have you guys used and what are the pros and cons? I'm not opposed to staying with steel and just bumping down to 20 ga. (.036") I guess my only motivation for moving to aluminum at this point is weight. Help me out here!
