It can be quite far, as some pointed out. But you can only fly it when you can see it.

I stand corrected on the 400' ceiling rule. Actually if you're flying within 3 miles of an airport, then you have to be under 400'. In real world, at 400' the craft becomes so small that you'll start losing your orientation (that return to home feature becomes handy). I used to fly r/c airplanes and usually flew well below 400'.
