I removed the axles amd noticed only 1" to 1.25" of the splines through the carrier, so I would say bottoming in the carrier can be ruled out. In fact, If I removed the bearings, then I would be able to see how further the axles can go through till it bottoms in the carrier.

I was told to remove the bearings and machine down the axles to push the bearings by 1/8 " towards the axle flange
