Actually it wasn't used, it had just been sitting for a while. I bought it from the original build shop. But I'd bet those springs had been in the same position for, oh, 5 years or so. And they were beehives, not exactly a high-pressure spring rate on those...

Go put a long wrench on that crank snout and turn it over once in a while.
