Yes you can. It is most commonly used as a glass cleaner, however. I went over mine with lacquer thinner before I sprayed epoxy to my bare metal. The applicator is important also. Use something as lint free as possible. Be mindful that the metal at this stage will flash rust quickly, because all oils are gone from the surface. Acetone will work well also.
