I think you need to define your ultimate needs; If you're not making lots of power, the 8.5 is plenty strong for most street apps. If big power is in your future, an investment into a well-built 9" might be called for.
If you're interested- I have a 3.42 12 bolt that I can have made to your width, but I'm asking 800 for the rear (all rebuilt), and an additional 600 for adding ford ends and Moser axles (cut to your width).
