C Lillard or M. Stielow, I have a question....or two
I was recently reading some information on the 9560 and 9561 COPO Camaro's, when I came across some information I had never known. Your two names popped into my head as someone who may have further knowledge than what I could find on the internet.
It seems that GM produced one and possibly two prototype ZL-1 1969 Camaro's which were the COPO 9567, Tuxedo black with special gold stripes. There are very few original pictures of these cars. One of the cars has Michigan license plates and one has USA-1 plates. They both have RS front ends and it appears one of the cars has the RS tail panel and backup lights while the other has the standard rear tail panel and lights. Both cars have rally wheels with "special center caps" and supposedly one had chrome beauty rings and one had gold.
From what I gather, there have been two nearly exact "tribute" cars built by two different individuals who had extensive knowledge of these cars. One of the "tribute" cars has the gold wheels and one has the chrome. One of the original cars is said to have a color matched front bumper.
There was some talk on several different forums about 10 years ago of the existence and possible whereabouts of these cars but nothing since. Back then it was rumored that one of the cars was in a GM storage facility somewhere near the GM proving grounds. A couple of the threads got pretty heated and were closed.
What I found was most interesting, is that as more information was shared the more taboo it became. Anyway, I just found the entire thing interesting and wondered if you could possibly shed some more light on a story that seems to have died more than 10 years ago.
