How many bends in the cable? How tight is the bend radius? How is the alignment, does the inner cable travel in a straight line in and out of the housing?

After that, disconnect the cable from the column. Does the shifter travel smoothly? Is there slop in the shifter mechanism in the column? I fixed one a couple months back where the column had been taken apart for paint and put together by someone who was not so bright. They left a bushing out and the shift mechanism was bound up in the column.
One bend in cable about 14" radius. Cable is close to straight in and out. Disconnected cable at trans and moved shifter though its motion. Very smooth with little effort. I did find the niloc nut attaching cable to shift lever on trans tighter than it needed to be. No question, when I move the shift lever by itself at the trans it takes more effort to go from Park to reverse than other positions. Found the separate switch for prndm linkage a little stressed. Unstressed and now fine.
