E39 models, especially the M5, are doing well market wise. They are phenomenal driving cars for the money. This is especially true of the regular V8 540i models. $12k will get you a gorgeous well cared for model. 100k miles is not a problem if maintained. If you can't or don't work on them yourself though, you're paying the BMW tax. I do my own work. I can't afford $20k in maintenance, lol.
