So this past weekend I woke up about 0200 and for some reason my brain said, take that old rusty 6.0 and put it into the trans am, and then put some lower compression pistons in the 5.3 and put into the scout.. This way you can have 2 engines ready to go for much cheaper than machining an entire new engine..
Insomnia sucks sometimes, but, I think this time it worked in my favor.
The 6.0 was picked up for a friend, but he never ended up using it. I tore it down, cleaned it, derusted it, installed new cam bearings, flex honed the cylinders, new rings, new rod/main bearings and put it back together. Since this is not a race car, just a few occasional burnouts and stuff like that, all the gen 3 parts will work perfectly fine, I'm just adding more cubic inches..
It’ll get the heads and camshaft from the 5.3 (pictured above) which will boost compression ratio, and other than that, it’ll be a nice cruiser for the trans am.
Since the 5.3 was built and I have all the specs, ill order up some dished pistons, and drop off a crank, gen 4 rods and the pistons to the machine shop for balancing. Then I can keep the 5.3 rotating kit on the shelf for another engine, and drop in the new rotating assembly.
I have a new cam spec’d for the turbos, I will need to get a set of heads readied for that engine.
It’s a bit of work to swap parts around, but, in my head it’s a bit of a win-win to get both vehicles running..
