My Trip To Dallas Texas
This thread is about community.
Monday of last week I started my trip to Dallas. I went on Business and will be going back next week to finish up. I didn’t know anyone in the area so I started asking around to try and find something to do. I got an intriguing response from a gentleman named Jerry. You may know him as "The Camtender".
The week started out very nice with 80 degree weather and no back breaking work for me. When I arrived in Dallas I gave Jerry a call. He offered to pick me up from my hotel and promised to show me a good time. Sure why not I thought. I could use a night out. I had no idea what I was in for.
Jerry picked me up at my hotel around 4:30 in the afternoon. We started our trek to his home which was about 45-50 min away. On the way talking about life and cars. Pulling into his driveway I began to get excited, I know what is inside. Jerry’s beautiful 68 Camaro. Looking at the build book on the way I though I was going to see a car setup for drag racing, but to my surprise he had started converting it into an open road car. Brilliant paint color and excellent craftsmanship. This car was brand new.
Jerry and I went inside for a drink and took a moment to watch a DVD. This man is proud of his car and he should be. Fully restored and modified in just over a year. Seeing the car in action on film mad my heart race. I couldn’t wait for what was next. Jerry had offered me a ride across Dallas to Bone Daddy’s Restaurant. I couldn’t wait.
The car is mean. 509ci sure does sound great, when you first fire it up. Entering the car I was surprised how comfortable it was. The roll cage was custom tailored to allow easy access to the racing seats and five point harnesses. Everything had its place from the gauges to the Fire Suppression System handle, Scary.
The ride was awesome, like a 68 should feel. Glued to the highway we sped off to dinner. Meeting with his buddy Will for dinner the cowboy hospitality kicked in. I was not aloud to pay for anything. Jerry was quick to get us a table in a Packed hot spot. So called HOT BABES were waiting to split their table with us. Just so happened my grandfather would have fit right in. Two 60 year old females waited for our company. Thanks Jerry.
After a great meal it was back to the 5-point harnesses and on the way to the hotel.
What I loved most about the car was the feeling I had riding in it. This Show Car belongs on the road. And believe me he drives it. I appreciated that. After arriving at the hotel Jerry was quick to ruin the brick pavers out front as the car disappeared into the night.
The point of this Thread is two fold. One to say thank you for a great time Jerry. I could not have had a better time. Two is to remind us that we belong to a community. Many of us will never meet, some of us will. But what a place to hang out. A week and a half ago I knew no one from Texas. Now I have made a great contact and a friend. So I am extending an invitation to anyone visiting the Detroit area, look me up if you need a tour guide I will be happy to help you out.
Thanks,
Jeff
