When I powder coated the rearend of my Camaro, I too did some body filler smoothing. I used the filler that had aluminum flakes in it. The powder coater told me he didn't know if it would work, but I told him to go ahead and we'll see. He did and its been several years and it still looks as good as it did in the beginning. So, I'd have to say using the filler worked quite well.
