Default Media Blasting and Primer

So im thinkin bout getting the body of my 70 nova media blasted. Does anybody have any advice on what to expect in terms of prep work before i take it, pricing and priming the body after the process. Im new to the whole body work thing and would like to do this right the first time and i think media blasting is going to be my best bet rather than lay fresh paint on what could be a multiple paintjob car already.

thanks in advance guys

jeff

As for cost, it really depends on the shop. Many charge around $100/hr.

My entire Barracuda, inside and out and everything but the hood, cost me about $1200. Most shells are around $800 or so.

I spent alot of time getting 99% of the undercoating off before I took it. Media can take it off but it takes along time if its thick. So one way to save some $$ is do that part yourself.

As for prep....take EVERYTHING off the car. If you have some panels that you know will be replaced, cut sections out to allow the blaster to get to the structure underneath. Dont cut out enough to weaken the car, but enough to get to areas that cant be reached with the panel in place.

Unless it's a body shop or resto shop doing the stripping don't let them prime it. You do not know what kind of primer they are going to use. If you have a shop in mind ask them to do it or ask them what kind of primer they use. When I do paint and body from metal up I put down epoxy frist than you can let it sit protected form moisture and such. Than when you are ready to do body work you don't have to strip off the primer, you can do filler work over the epoxy. Make sure to follow the tech sheet for proper prep before using the epoxy and before doing your filler work over the epoxy. I use Sikkens Autosurffacer EP, but I work for the company so I get a good deal.

I did the primer myself...PPG DP90.

I agree....unless its a bodyshop, you are better off doing it yourself.
