Default LS engine designations/codes?

So I started looking around online for LS3 engines (pull outs) and I have seen a lot of posts with this info on them - 6.2L VIN W (8th digit, opt LS3) I was just wondering what this information meant - I know what the 6.2L means, but what about the Vin W and the 8th digit, opt LS3? Is that anything I should watch for? Does it even matter?

My Chevelle is old school... It has a belt driven power steering pump.
