Default Do ls motors have vin numbers on them?

I have been hearing that people in my area have been getting their cars impounded and their motors are being ripped out because they have stolen ls motors. One if this is true, how can they even tell? To my knowledge I dont know where the vin numbers would be located, and if they are on the motor where? I am just curious because I am sure my motor isnt stolen but just for future reference how can they tell if at all?

I have a GM LS crate motor and would like to know where to look for a vin myself.

There's a vin derivative laser etched on the drivers side of the engine block near the oil filter. It's on the flat/machined surface where the bellhousing mates to the block.

After searching google for a good pic of the location I described above (LS1 & LS6):

I also stumbled across this which looks like the more traditional gm gen I location, but this is an LS3:

Here's a diagram indicating the location of the 6.0 from a G8 (L76?):

And this is off a Corvette LS3 (this is the rear of the engine driver's side) same location as the 6.0 diagram above:

Obviously if this is top secret, a Mod should feel free to delete this posting.

Thanks, I tried to find out on google and found nothing.

I just got back in from the garage, my LSA crate motor has no numbers in either place.
Here's a picture of the back

The front had nothing at all on either side.

My LS2 block that I recently had sleeved has a vin number on the bottom of a flat pad at the front of the engine on the left, or drivers side of the block. You can see it at the top of the picture, on the bottom of that locator pad. Would be virtually impossible to find with accessories in place.

Cool

I live in the SF Bay Area......LS equipped cars are in high demand by the street hooligans in "Oaktown" lots of thefts around here....the Trailblazer SS must be easy to steal.....see them all the time on Copart auctions with drive train missing
