Default Unplanned retirement

Hey guys. Sorry if this seems really desperate or odd but here goes. I have been given the “unofficial” but reliable heads up that my role at work is being eliminated in the coming months. After more then 25 years in technology it’s going to be near impossible fir me to be rehired. Not because my tech is old in reality I work in an emerging space. However, men in their 50’s have a real hard time getting hired in tech.

It doesn’t help that I am far from tech centers like the valley or the PNW. Moving is a non option my wife has a small business she can only have here.

So looking for ideas, any online business or franchises people recommend? What about other ideas? The angst is eating me up.

Any help appreciated

Hell of a move and not sure what exactly tech you're into .....Waterloo, Ontario. Kitchener,Waterloo, cambridge is a pretty happening area for tech . Waterloo seems to be from what I understand second to silicon valley in north America. Good luck and if theres anything I can do let me know

XLexusTech,

1. Hang in there. I have personally been in your exact situation.
2. Don't move because your wife has a job there.
3. May I help? What "tech" are you proficient?
4. I need access to a 3D printer for a stupid aquarium I am building..,
5. But now I stutter.., Hang in there! It will be okay,

The great thing about technology is that it allows you to work anywhere in the world. Many companies now are allowing their employees to work remotely from home. If I were you I would reach out to as many tech recruiters as I could find and see what you can get.

Stay positive and don't get discouraged! Remember, everything happens for a reason even though we may not see it right away.

My first thought was can you join your wife in her business and perhaps help her take it to the next level?

Happened to a buddy of mine in January, kinda knew it was coming but still sucked. He's stayed in touch with friends at the company and now that things have cooled down/restructured, they are calling him about opportunities.... his problem is he got used to the early retirement and now is being kinda picky....

Do you have a case for litigation due to lack of compliance with the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/statutes/adea.cfm)?

Not sure if you have government / government support businesses that do software in your area, but it's worth taking a look and they tend to comply with the various discrimination laws a bit more rigorously.

If your a strong leader in software, there is a strong market available regardless of your age, but it really depends on where your located. Something to also check out is a telecommute gig. Being in a leadership role is more difficult, but if you still have software skills that are in demand, there are opportunities out there.

Thoughts?
