Default JR's 65 Mustang ST "Sport-Touring" build

Hello... I've been hanging in the shadows checking out this site and all you guys' cool cars for a few months now and figure it's time I start a project thread of my own.

I really like the "Pro-Touring" style, but I'm pretty conservative when it comes to first gen Mustang styling and mods, so the car won't be quite as extreme as most the cars you guys have built or are building here (hence the “Sport-Touring” label) but will basically be going in the PT direction, not to mention my budget.... I don’t want to have my wife shoot me in my sleep! So this time I’m trying to keep it on the down low. BUT… as money and time allow, I may make changes to my plan and go a little more extreme in the future.

I've been tinkering with my 65 Mustang sense 2003 on and off, but I think it's time to get my crap together and start working on it a little more seriously. The car started life as a “House Wife’s” base model Hard Top with a 200” six banger and a C4 auto transmission, nothing special.

So far I have converted it to a pretty stout 302 with a T-10 four speed, 9" rear end, lowered the upper A-arms 1 ¾” using a Pro-Motorsports negative wedge camber corrector kit, went to V8 hubs and spindles, Shelby quick steering kit, changed to 5 leaf, reverse eye rear springs, fabricated a cross member to clear a Canton 8 qt. oil pan, and built an 2 ½” exhaust using Hooker Super Comps, Dr. Gas “X” pipe and Spin Tech mufflers. I have the car almost completely gutted, and have stripped it to bare metal and I’m almost done with the bodywork now.

My plan for the car:
No crazy body mods, just trim and badges deleted, Shelby fiberglass hood and front valance still using the stock chrome bumpers, or close to stock anyway. Paint will be 2 stage, 2010 Ford, Steel Blue Metallic. I want a clean, sleeper look.

16”X7” American Racing Torque Thrust II wheels with BF Goodrich 225/50ZR16 G Force T/A’s at all four corners. (I know, I know….. tiny little tires for a car here on this site, but the first gen Mustangs just look weird to me with 20” wheels under them!)

Wilwood or Baer 4 wheel disc brakes… 12” front – 11” rear. (Still on the fence on this)

Sub-frame connectors, Monte Carlo Bar and Export Brace, 4 point roll bar, Traction Master Under-ride traction bars and 1” front, ¾” rear sway bars. Mostly all of Shelby’s tricks, but a little better.

Interior wise, I want to keep it clean…. Scat Pro-Car buckets, matching rear upholstery, leather wrapped Grant wheel, a couple gauges, competition belts and nice stereo.

Told you I’m pretty conservative!

So, there it is, I hope you guys will coach me, give me a bad time, shoot me some advice and let me know what you think. I’ll get pics posted as soon as I figure out how to do it……

Thanks,
John

Sounds like a great plan. I'm with you on the 20" wheels... Those Torq Thrusts will look just fine...

So for the pics the best way to post them it to upload them to Photobucket or Flickr or some other Photo hosting site. Once hosted, you can copy the IMG link and paste it into your post on here.

Hope that helps.

Chris

Looks like you have a nice project John. I know what you mean about the wife, I now have to sleep with one eye open. This site has a funny way of making you spend money.

This is early on in the build, V8/4 speed and suspension mods already done at this point. Pics aren't in any order... I'll get that going soon once i get back to work on it.

Well, I got out and did some work on the car this week. Doing some fab work in the trunk to move the battery back there, and prepped and primed the fiberglass parts (hood, and front valance) I'll put up some pics soon.
