Default Selling a California black plate car back in California after it went to canada

I bought a 1965 gto in California in 2010 that was taken off the road in 1978 and brought it back to Canada. Car was made in Fremont and never left the state with only two owners. I have the original black plates and title. 12 years later I completed a pro tour revision on the car and had it in SEMA in 2022 as a feature car, let’s say it turned out pretty good. Now I would like to sell the car and it will probably sell in the state of California. What would the new owner encounter to register this vehicle with the plates and title in hand.

My guess is they would need to request the old license plate number (since the # likely went back into circulation), and if still available they could simply use the old plate and place the current stickers on it.

The title is useful as it proves it came from the states so there would be no duty to be paid when going back. A U.S. citizen (purchaser) can take it back across the border with the proper paper work. DOT, EPA and bill of sale or Canadian registration all need a customs stamp before you can register back in the states.

If you have a old registration tying the plates to the car you might be OK or look online on the DMV website and see if you can order the same in a personalized plate and just use the orig.
