I'm thinking about converting my Drag Race setup Grand National to more of a street driver with better handling. I just finished building it last year and made a few track passes and it's been sitting too much. Just want to enjoy it more. It's still v6 powered and makes about 900hp and will stay that way even as a street car. The motor is pretty tame, just full of real good parts.
Welcome MeanMike! Nice looking car. It takes a lot to pull both tires up, so there's no doubt you've got it covered power wise. Do you have a game-plan to begin the street car conversion?
I have an idea, but it may change. I know drag suspensions, but not handling stuff.
First, I have to get rid of the lightweight drag only front suspension. I'm thinking of putting ridetech front a-arms, coilovers and muscle bar a along with some 13" wilwoods. The rear is currently a 9" with a spool and 35 spline axles. I'll probably put matching ridetech coilovers on the rear and a wave track diff. I already have 12" wilwoods on the rear. The trans is a th400 for now and will stay that for a while, but I would love to do a t56 if I can find one to hold the power. I haven't decided on wheels yet, but something 18". The car is mini tubed and the frame is notched so it can swallow at least a 315, and maybe a 335 but I don't want to have to mortgage my house for tires. I may swap the fuel cell and weldon pump for a stock tank and twin in tank pumps.
I fab a lot of my own parts and this will give me an excuse to make a lot more.
Sounds like you've done some research. You won't go wrong with Ridetech.
You'd have to mortgage the farm to build a t56 that would hold the kind of power your making. Not as big a deal in a street car, but mega rpm clutch dumps with sticky rear tires...forget it.
Whatever you choose to do, please start a build thread. I will be following this one! Where are you in Tn?
