Question Bigger brake rotors at the rear

Can anyone explain to to my why some cars have smaller brake rotors at the front and bigger brake rotors at rear of the car??

I'll take a stab at this one.

Not that it's better at all, but some guys are concerned with how a larger wheel with a smaller brake appears. I've heard of guys running 18" wheels up front and 20" wheels in the rear, and wanting their brakes to appear proportional. Not that it's better in any way, and not that I would do it personally, but I have heard of stranger things....

The rotors at the rear are smaller because you don't need as much brake at the back.. my race car has 15" rotors with a Brembo Endurance Caliper up front... at the rear I use 14" rotor with the same calipers a Ferrari F 50 uses up front... during a race the bias will get adjusted to compensate for changes in braking due primarily to tire conditions...

As Thunder already referenced, the amount of rear force required to slow the vehicle is drastically reduced. Besides the obvious front to rear weight bias, as soon as you tap the brake pedal you move 20-30% of the rear weight forward increasing the amount of front brake required. If you had equal braking F to R, you would have a very tail-happy vehicle.

Frank.. that's on old bucket that one... factory Porsche race car. This is the car I will be racing at the Rennsport Reunion in November at Daytona ..

Here is a good comparison photo.. on the right that is a 12 inch rotor with a Brembo " big Red" caliper... and a 15 inch rotor with the Brembo endurance caliper...

Oh man, I am only 35 minutes from the track. Now your going to have to come up with a couple extra passes! I'll let you drive my street racer if I can drive yours!

I have another customer just got his GT3 racer. I made him the same deal, he said no!

BTW, call me about the brakes.

Let me know if you are serious about tickets... there are cars and drivers from all over the world coming to this event so it will be very cool. My buddy is bringing the 917/30 Donahue Sunoco 1500hp bad boy . www.rennsport2007.com You can drive it... it is only a 3.2 liter motor but it puts out over 600lb ft and 700 hp , 2,100 lbs... Craigg from Tial Industires is coming up with new turbo's and we are going to test them on the dyno in the nest week or so . By the way. lots of fun to drive with a titanium spool Just wear your Depends....
