Default Help me decide on a compressor

I have picked out a couple compressors, but I really don't know the ins and outs of compressors. I am looking at spending around $500, the only things that I have to have is a 220v setup that is oiled. Here are a couple links to the two that I am looking at right now. Let me know what you think or if you have any other models for me to check out.

What kind of work and tools do you plan on running off them?

I have one similar to those, but a Craftsman. It's been working fine for a few years.

It can't really keep up with body tools like a DA sander.

Back in the day, probably 15 years ago, I bought a Home Depot 5 horse and it was a damn good one. Held up to a cre of 3 full time for 7 to 8 years. Obviously a bit small in size and CFM rating for a full on shop, now we run a 10HP Champion that is a bad mama jama! I have no idea what Home Depot sells now, but I suspect they will stand behind it pretty well like they do on everything they sell. I bet even out of warrentee you could return it if you have a issue

11 to 12 CFM is not going to run DA, grinders, painting, etc for continous operation, In 5 minutes your going to be waiting on the compressor. i would look for closer to 19 - 20 CFM @ 90LBS to keep up.

I have a Maxis 60 gallon 7hp. It works great for what I need it for and can handle 2 guys running off of it pretty easily (impact, chisel, DA sanders) Its 10.3 at 90psi. Its about maybe 3yrs old (no issues) and made by Cambell Housfield. Ive seen the portercable ones at home depot, for the buck you cant go wrong. I cant remember but i think i got mine at Ace

I have been using a ProAir 80 gallon 2 stage air compressor for about 10 years now with very little problems. It puts out 17.4 cfm @ 90 psi. IMO I would not buy anything less then a 2 stage 80 gallon with a good cfm rating as Frank said. It keeps up with me when I am sandblasting or running a grinder. You will definitely regret it if you get too small of a unit, it will not cost that much in the long run just to step up a little. I also recommend using a 3 stage system to filter the air. The one I use is by Sharpe, Model 6760.
