sponsors?
I'm looking for a little help, if anyone wants to get on board and help out it sure would be greatly apprieciated. Here's the car 1968 camaro named TROUBLE, looking for any kind of help I need lots of parts what I already have is front and rear suspension from Jakes Rod Shop, Wegner 427 lsx the rest is up in the air. It's being built at my shop in Montello, WI and as of right now heres what I plan on attending next year, part of the hot rod power tour depending on where and what dates, Motorstate challenge, a bunch of good guy shows columbus, joliet and maybe indy or nashville?, car craft nationals and I'm sure some more hear and there. I will try to get it in some build sections of a couple magazines. I'm up for options or just great deals on some parts, the last two vehicles that left here are getting shot for features, it will be a very nice car. Here's a rough rendering from Carter Hickman. It will also have some cool Ring Brothers carbon fiber parts on it. Thanks Telly
heres the last two done here at Violetto Autoworks

I would probably put together some of the Brands and parts you want, then try to deal from there... I dont think people should take sponsor just because it if offered, it should have been what you wanted at the beginning. Not trying to imply that is what you are doing, just a statement.
Put together a list, and then contact those parts manufactures to see what they can offer you... I personally have an alloted amount of parts I donate, and looked for individuals that wanted it, rather than just use it because it was there...

The rendering looks awesome Telly. I like it.
That Wegner engine should kick ass as well. Maybe you can look into group buys for some discounted prices? (I know Frank @ Prodigy Customs runs them once in a while.)
GOOD LUCK!

This is completely the wrong way to do this. You need to go direct to the manufacturers and distributors with this. If your a individual building a personal Hot Rod, I say pass. It is not worth it. If your a business building Hot Rods then I say go for it.
You have to:
Call the company and find out from the receptionist who handles the sponsorship at each company and what their policy for submitting proposals is. Do they have a form (probably not, but ask).
Then you need to do up a proposal, state what exactly your looking for, why you choose that part (not because it is free or cheap) and how your going to make them famous. Include the rendering, a current state of the project, other cars you have done with awards and where it went, and a list of places you will go with the car when done. Big trades shows (with confirmed locations) and guaranteed magazine features (with letters from editor proof) are big influences. Also very important, you need to find a way to make it clear you can afford to finish the project with or without the sponsorship from them or others. If it looks like you need free parts to finish the car, they might be reluctant if they do not know all the other parts are paid for or secured.
This needs to be address to the person that handles the sponsorships DO NOT try to do this on the phone at first. You need to do it by mail so they can deal with it on their schedule, not your schedule when you call and they are doing something else important and you interrupt them.
Your going to spend some money here, but you need to send all these proposals FED Ex Priority, UPS Priority, address to the representative that handles the sponsorships. This way it goes STRAIGHT to his desk and not through the mail room. He also will open it right away wondering what is so damn important. This by no means he will do anything with it right then, but he will know it is important to you and just might look at it. Then you can follow up call the next day to see if he got the proposal. Nothing more unless he starts conversation about the project.
Then wait and hope you did not waste a 100 hours and $500 Fed Ex fees on 20 proposals.
I can tell you in advance, things are tight out there, and sponsorships are harder to get today then yesterday when cash was flying around. Sponsors are looking for more and more now, many sponsors are looking for ugly stickers boldly placed on the car, you passing out brochures. You have to decide if it is worth $500 of product to put a sticker on your car that totally clashes with the theme. And is it your car or does it appear to be their car?
In then end, you might decide to find one distributor to hook you up with some deals.

Very good points, I surely dont have time to go through and send each and every company proposals, its probably worth hitting a few for the bigger ticket items, like brakes, wheels, a/c, etc. I thought it might spark some interest putting it on here but I sure dont want a rolling billboard but the car will be at a lot of places and it will be getting the snot pounded out of it. It sucks at the point were at the shop we've built some killer cars out there but I dont do the volume to get a great deal on parts and every company wants a 5k buy in its killing me. And I'm willing to pay for the parts I just want a great deal.

FRANK,
Great write up! and totally agreeable.
I have done lots of leg work on my own project in regards to finding sponsor.
The one thing Id add to the list is stick with that company if they sell other products you are pursueing. You dont want to have a sponsor question "why did he buy that part from them when they sell it themselves" only to save a couple of bucks. In the long run it will benefit your build.
I would also pursue companies that are trying to establish more recognition with there product and/or services and are trying to get there name outhere themselves. They typically will be more willing to contribute to help themsevles out for exposure.
Keep in mind that most companies will want to know why you choose them over others. Be prepared to answer this question with integrity to there product not just for price.
On a personal note- Ive seen Telly's work and its great. And to Franks question; Yes he is a hot rod builder he's just stuck in no mans land in upper WI. My small contribution is towards a builder I see that IMO is striving harder than most to "get there" One way or another the fellowship should always be there.
Dave
