Jimmie Johnson's 67 Camaro

Jimmie Johnson (#48 for all of you non-NASCAR fans) is in the process of building this 67 Camaro. The car started out as a drag car before Jimmie sent it over to West Coast Customs. After the car returned home, he decided he wanted something a little more radical. He contacted Jim Pettigrew, formerly of 21st Century Street Machines, to build a NASCAR inspired pro-touring machine. Pettigrew has been around the racing and NASCAR scene for over 20 years and knows a thing are two about competitive motorsports with the likes of Hendrick Motorsports and Dale Earnhardt on his resume'.

Jim met with Jimmie and they developed a game plan to create a very potent 67. The inspiration for this build started with a Nextel Cup motor that was built in Honor of Randy Dorton by the guys in the Hendrick motor shop. As any motorsports fan will recall, Randy Dorton died in the Hendrick plane crash on the way to Martinsville in October of 04, and Randy was the head of the motor program at that time. The motor Jimmie is using was constructed, dyno'd and auctioned off on Ebay with the proceeds going to charity.

Jimmie won the auction and the motor is going into his 67. It made 815 hp on the dyno. Knowing a full on Cup motor would be too radical on the street, the guys at Hendrick are going to lower the compression to 10:1 and change to a milder cam so it can run on pump gas. The de-tuned motor should still make about 650 hp. and retain the dry sump. Jim is constructing a custom oil reservoir that is located on the passenger side of the cowl. They had to run a motor plate because Cup motors have the motor mounts machined off, so for all of you out there that want to run a Cup block keep this in mind.

As far as the rest of the car:

21st Century front subframe with C5 suspension, brakes and rotors
6 speed manual
Slight mini-tub with custom offset shackels and drop leaf springs
Ford 9 inch with Wilwood brakes
Custom gas tank
Custom built headers and exhaust

The color will change, but it has not been picked as of yet. Neither has the wheel and tire combo

Look for future updates as we follow the build on Lateral-g.net
