This was my first car built off the frame.
It started with a basket-case 67 coupe in
Rhode Island. As most find out, once you
start peeling away the onion you find rust.
All new floors, a rocker, the mini tubs and
shock tower kept me busy through the first
winter. Since my son (John) and I were
tackling all the metal work, we had the
luxury of really taking our time to get it
right. It probably took me four times longer
than the pros, but the experience was
priceless. The relationships you develop
along the way are also priceless. Kyle and
Stacy Tucker at DSE were incredibly helpful,
considering I had tons of technical
questions for them. Following the metal
work, I needed to fit the sheet metal and
paint the car. The whole front clip is all
NOS sheet metal and I even found an NOS door
shell. The car was moved to Yonkers where I
was lucky enough to become friends with an
unbelievable body guy, Adolfo Carril. He
allowed me to work with him and taught me so
much about the whole process of working
metal and body work. Once the shell was
painted, we had a ton of work to re-assemble
the car. It really seemed overwhelming,
especially when you sit in front of the TV
and watch Chip Foose and his crew breeze
through it in 7 days. We basically did the
final welding of the upper shock mounts and
perches to set the pinion angle, installed
all new glass and interior, among many other
things. And I can't leave out the wife who
probably still has a stiff neck from
spending three nights stretching the
headliner before finally gluing it in place
- it's got to be the worst job there is in a
car build. Everything is new, it's even got
that new car smell when you climb in. I need
to roughly set the toe and camber to get it
to a front end machine and then I can
finally take it out for its first drive. It
sounds mean.
