Code Name SledgeHammer
This 67 Camaro was purchased sight unseen on eBay for $19,000. It was
presented as a gem, but it was not. Its true value was actually somewhere around
$11,000.
When I finally got the car I discovered that it had all kinds of problems. My
father and I went on a mission to see what we could do for the car to make it
drivable. The transmission and rear end combo was absolutely terrible. At 65 MPH
it was turning almost 4000 rpm'sway to high. Not only that, it had 4-wheel
unassisted drum brakes and a host of other body and mechanical issues.
In January and February of this year I contacted several different shops in
and out of the area to find out who could do a project car. At first we were
going to do just the transmission and brakes, but after having it looked over by
a few shops, we knew it needed much more. The more my father and I talked about
the car, the more we knew we had to either sell it at a loss, or take on a large
scale project, which meant opening up our checkbooks.
I searched high and low for a shop that could help, and was told by Matt at
Matt's Bow Tie Classics about an up and coming
shop in Sacramento, Ca called Gearhead Garage, who
happened to be looking to make a statement with a good project car. After
talking with Jason Walroth, the owner of
GearHead Garage, I knew that his team would be right for the job.
After spending some time with Jason and his guys, the project grew from just
some wheels, brakes, and a transmission, to absolutely everything. Jason has
been kind enough during the build to send pictures to me on a regular basis, and
both my father and I have had a chance to visit the car during the build up. The
next thing to be done is the body, which is going to be Blue Pearl with Corvette
Spiral Grey metallic Z stripes. After that the final assembly will be done. The
car is scheduled to be done by November of this year.
