Owner: Paul Dyck
The GUN 69 Camaro has had quite an exiting
life to date. This late 1969 SS 396 375hp
L78 Camaro was ordered with only one thing
in mind, drag racing. Sold in Ontario Canada
it was ordered with as little as it took to
make it as fast as it could be. A fathom
green L78 Muncie rock crusher equipped X11
car with a 12 bolt and factory 4:11's
companied the drag strips of Ontario Canada
until the early eighties. It then changed
hands to rip up the drag strips of the west
coast until the early two thousands. It
again changed hands not to be seen again,
stored in a old chicken barn acquired as
part of a real estate deal.
Paul Dyck owner of D.Y.C.K. Design and GUN
was offered the car as project in need of
work for still a hefty price. Known for
building and designing a few pro touring
cars out of Canada's Killer Customs the L78s
owner thought Paul could bring the car back
to its former glory. Paul acquired the car
in very good condition with the original
motor and only 19,000 miles on the clock.
This car had a history of going fast and
needed to get back to buisness. The
new owner had something different in mind,
throwing a curve or two into things this
cars new playground would become twisty
roads and long high speed straits.
The car was virtually rust free and still
packed plenty of punch in it drag prepped
450hp 396BB so why change it. The original
color was resprayed and the floorpan
modified to fit huge 345/25/20s with a mini
tub that looks stock from inside the trunk.
The hounds tooth was touched up and new
headliner installed to keep it quite classic
on the inside. The M22 rock crusher was
pulled out to make room for a Tremec TKO 600
which makes those long highway drive a real
treat not a chore. The center force clutch,
original linkage and Muncie handle make
shifting this TKO a dream. The upgrade that
really makes this car a blast to drive is
the full Speed Tech Track Time suspension
package. The front is comprised of a new
frt. subframe with double adjustable QA1
shocks high clearance arms to allow room for
19x10s. A power Unisteer Rack and ATS
spindles. Speed Tech Stainless Headers
move the exhaust past the subframe and out
but are designed to let the ride stay low
and not drag like most big block Camaros.
The rear uses the Speed Tech Torque Arm
system QA1 double adjustables and a pan hard
bar to plant the tires to the ground. The
suspension links all meet up at a Strange
equipped 12 Bolt posi rear end that wears a
pair of Baer 14" Pro Plus 6 Piston Brakes
that match the Baers on the front. The
Rushforth Rated X wheels add a real classy
finish to the car measuring 19x10 and 20x12
and are wrapped in Nitto Invos 275/30/19 and
345/25/20s.
A few other details were added just to give
it a little extra in the style department. A
few Billet Specialties pieces on the engine
and some cast Chevy valve covers, and what
1st gen Camaro engine compartment would be
complete without some Ring Bros hood hinges.
The exterior received a GUN Bigger Block
hood that allows for the tall Victor
manifold and some color matched bumpers. The
interior was treated to a set of custom GUN
Camaro gauges that tie some of the exterior
red into the interior and keep a actuate eye
on what's going on under the hood.
The plan was to take an already complete
car, make a Pro-Touring car out of it and
not blow the budget. Use bolt on parts that
work, and what ever existing parts that
could be re-used. Building a fast, fun to
drive attention getting car just requires a
little planning a lot of thought and don't
stray from the plan. Pauls Camaro shows how
a bolt together car can easily accomplish
this.
Look for the GUN Camaro representing Speed
Tech Suspension in the upcoming Super Chevy
Suspension and Handling shootout. You will
be pleasantly surprised how well an iron
headed, bolt together big block Camaro could
do.
